Principal's Message

young

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year Wineteer Thunderbird parents and students!  The beginning of the school year is an exciting time for everyone.

The staff at Wineteer is dedicated to educating students and meeting the needs of the “whole child”.  It is our goal to balance rigorous academics with the social skills necessary to achieve. This aligns with the Derby School District mission this year:

“Every student, every day, preparing for the future.”

At Wineteer, we will accomplish this by ensuring that all students are provided effective instruction with engaging activities that incorporate cooperative learning.  This is modeled in our STEM science curriculum Project Lead the Way.  This is an inquiry-based learning that develops another level of problem solving and thinking outside of the box.

Our district social-emotional curriculum Second Step builds the foundations for life-long social skills needed to be successful beyond the elementary years.  Our staff promotes the principles taught in Second Step and recognize students that are “Caught Being Good”.  We also highlight a student each month for the six pillars of character: respect, responsibility, caring, trustworthiness, fairness, citizenship. Each day we strive to recognize students that show their Thunderbird pride.

There are many new staff members that have joined the Thunderbird team and I can’t wait to introduce them.  In kindergarten, Lainie Lawson and Andrea Miller-Fanlo; 1st, Sheri Frazier; 2nd, Samantha Cheek ; 3rd, Maggie Stanwick and Zachary Clark; 4th, Brianna Hovey and Danica Curtis; 5th, Erin May. In addition, Emily Noe is our literacy coach, Kaitlyn Tanner, school psychologist; Leah Grim, social worker; Melissa Solomon, Family Engagement Educator; Sandra Sills, secretary; Julie Kutz, office clerk. I look forward to seeing new faces and meeting everyone during the beginning of the school year.   For the 2017-2018 school year, I can’t wait to see what amazing challenges are met with resilience from all of the Thunderbirds at Wineteer!  We have amazing staff members that are ready to reach new goals with you!  #WineteerStrong
